The Gospel of Jesus by Mark: An exciting, section by section journey through the book of Mark which is a fast-paced action report of the ministry life of Jesus. Written first for those under the violent persecution of Nero, he spends his words proving the opening sentence of his book, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Have your Bible in hand, mark it up and join in this exciting study.

Of course He is! No question! But guest pastor, Christopher Hilken reminds us that the definitions of good in our culture most often do not align with the definitions of good as revealed in God’s Word. And when we embrace His definition, it offers so much more peace, assurance, and hope as we face a life here that is often filled with what seems to be the opposite of good.

Surrender normally means defeat. But from God’s perspective, if we are surrendering into the care of the only hope for survival, it is instead a move of thankful, courageous, victory. We will look at many of the most famous “surrenders” in Biblical history and enjoy God’s invitation to joyfully surrender into His care in this life and into eternity.

The most important target to hit as a disciple of Jesus is BEING in a relationship with Him. We know what it’s like to have the desire to grow in our relationship with God and yet feel stagnant. The Being Challenge will lead you to a stronger relationship with God through simple challenges that focus on the 5 keystone habits of Jesus: community, scripture, prayer, solitude and church.

Lent is a season when we take a look at our lives in view of God’s mercy toward us in the sacrifice of his Son for us on the cross. We, in turn, are called by God, especially during this time of repentance and reflection, to be living sacrifices for him, displaying our devotion to him in word and deed. Jesus helps us to see the richness of God’s mercy in his life, death and resurrection. The services in this worship series for Lent focus our eyes of faith on the meaning behind God’s mercy made manifest in Christ.

The gospel is meant to be shared everywhere! Whether we leave on a mission trip or talk with our neighbors or model Christ’s love to our coworker or pray for our families, we can hold out our hope in our spheres of influence. Christ’s ministry consisted of three ways He led us – as a prophet (someone who proclaimed God’s Word), as a priest (someone who sacrificed on our behalf), and as a king (someone who rules according to God’s ways). Christ, in turn, gives to us what He has done. He is a prophet who calls us to speak His Word as His witnesses. He is a priest who calls us to offer our lives as sacrifices. And He is a king who gives us a kingdom. In this series, we discuss what it looks like to lead in these ways.

Most people think of the soul as a nebulous part of them that is mysteriously internal to them. The Bible, however, often uses the word “soul” to describe the whole of who we are. The soul is what holds us together. When God creates the first man, who becomes a “living being,” the Hebrew word behind this phrase in the book of Genesis is the word for “soul.” When any part of us is off – be it our emotions, our bodies, or our minds – our souls are off.
Midweek, Feb 26 – April 10, 2020
Imagine that a friend or family member who is unfamiliar with your Christian faith asks you to summarize the gospel. What would you say? The Apostle Peter calls us to be prepared always to give a reason for the hope we have as Christians (1 Peter 3:15). As followers of Jesus we have the best news in the world to share. But are we prepared to share it? During this season of Lent, we’re going to work together to formulate faithful Christian confessions of the gospel; the kind that could be said in about seven words. We’ll use a format that will allow us to enter into a creative dialogue in a Bible Study / Devotion setting after enjoying a meal together. Come join in the conversation!

We all can be overcome by temptation – sometimes over and over again. Often, we try to tackle temptation through sheer willpower. We simply “try really hard” to resist sin. But our own willpower can never overcome sin. Thankfully, God’s will has the power to transform our hearts and change our lives.

Yes there is, but it’s not a something, it’s a Someone.

“Real. Present. God.” summarizes the Psalm of the Reformation, Psalm 46. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1). The only real God, the Triune God, is truly present in the person of Jesus. The only real God, the Triune God, entered the real world to save us from sin. The only real God, the Triune God, is present and powerful in the troubles of life.

Lent is a season that calls us to reflect on the great love that Christ has for us – a love so great that it moves Him to die. We, of course, are not only to reflect on Christ’s love, but reflect out His love to the world. As Jesus Himself commands: “Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another” (John 13:34). In this series, we look at some of the ways we can reflect Jesus’ love, using Paul’s description of what love is from 1 Corinthians 13.

Do we really believe that miracles happen? For many of us, if we’re honest, the answer is “no.” Around Jesus, though, they happened a lot. Eyesight to the blind. Diseases healed. The dead raised to life. Miracles happened. They still happen today. If we open our eyes, we can see the miracles God is doing around us, and if we look with the eyes of faith, we might even see them in our own lives.

Charles Dickens begins his classic, A Tale of Two Cities, saying, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This is not only a synopsis of the time before the French Revolution, it is a synopsis of all history. Every time carries with it good and bad. The book of Genesis explains why this is the case. Ever since sin entered the world, the best and the worst have locked horns. The book of Genesis looks at the tension between the best and the worst and offers hope that the best is yet to come.

Christ is the cornerstone of our faith.  This means the foundation of our life as the people of God is built upon Him. In this series, we take a look at the teachings of Scripture that comprise the foundation of our faith and see how they center on Christ and shape our everyday lives.

The title “Keeping Christmas” is inspired by the final paragraph of Dickens’ well-known and beloved book “A Christmas Carol.”

“He had no further intercourse with Spirits, but lived upon the Total Abstinence Principle, ever afterwards; and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God Bless Us, Every One!”

We do not know how to “keep Christmas well”, if our stress, spending, and spiritual celebrations are the evidence.  We need to know how the Lord would have us “keep,” or observe, the birth of our Savior. We will describe and discover how we, like Scrooge, have failed to keep Christmas, and how we, like he, are in need of a visitation; not by three spirits, but by the Holy Spirit, with the result that we find and celebrate what the Lord most wants us to have – and keep – this Christmas.

During the season of Lent, the church focuses on the humiliation of Jesus Christ, the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. To the unbelieving eye, His crucifixion is nothing more than a sad story of defeat. To those who believe, however, it is the joyous story of our salvation. In the humble appearance of the cross we see by faith God’s power being revealed. We see the “arm of Yahweh” outstretched once more on behalf of all people. Rather than feel sorry for Jesus during Lent, we praise and thank Him for “carrying our sorrows” and being “wounded for our transgressions,” knowing that He did all this willingly. We repent for our frequent lack of faith in the suffering and death of Jesus, as well as for our failure to see God’s glory revealed in Jesus’ humiliation on behalf of man. And we trust in the universal atonement that Jesus made through death for us and for our salvation.

In this sermon series we will look at four phrases known as the “Solas” of our faith.  They summarize teachings that we as a Church affirm and believe the Scriptures teach. The phrases themselves can be traced back to the 16th Century Reformation. Each contains a form of the word “Sola” (a Latin word meaning “alone”) and summarizes a foundational truth in regards to how God saves sinners.  Join us!
